Pink The New Blue?

Seems like I'm having a pink phase at the moment.  I attribute this obsession temporary phenomenon to working on my Tilda House Tapestry blocks and those cutesy children's wear that I'm planning.  Not to worry ... boys will get that fair share in blues.  What can I say? ... I'm old fashioned.

Or maybe it's a stripe thing.  I don't know why but once in a while I like to kill myself matching striped side seams.  Therein lies the challenge.

Believe it or not, the pattern for this top is my all time favourite Scout Woven Tee.  A pattern that's meant for woven fabrics.  As I browse through the blogs I find there's been many successful versions of the Scout Tee sewn up in knit fabrics.  Needless to say I had to attempt it myself.  And I absolutely love it!

Ironically I did not need go down a size as the norm suggests when sewing with knit fabric using patterns meant for wovens.  That's a real bonus because I didn't need to trace up a smaller sized pattern.  I always cut and sew on separate days especially when cutting striped fabric and hoping to match them was rather tedious.

And here are some pink fabrics that I'll be working on for those Tilda blocks.  They sure look so pretty together.

So what's next on my sewing table?  Blues and whites ... do I hear a collective sigh of relief?!  LOL!!  I've got a Plaintain cut in a Breton like stripe and more thin striped knit in the horizon.

Grainline - Archer

Pattern: Grainline - Archer
Size: 12
Fabric: 2.2M 45" Cotton Lawn (Harisons)
Cost: RM15.00 / M

  • Had to add another pleat at the sleeve cuff because my wrists are small, also I shortened the cuff length
  •  Used my go to bias binding hem treatment

When interfacing the cuff, the interface is about 1/4" over the cuff fold to ensure a nice crisp fold

I draw a sewing line when closing the cuff sides, just to be sure everything is parallel

Saddle stitches for the cuff with Perle No. 12

Close up of the hidden button placket detail

Saddle stitching again across the yoke

Hemming with bias bind and then hand stitching it down

Grainline - Archer (WIP)

Pattern: Grainline - Archer
Size: 12
Fabric: 2.2M 45" Cotton Lawn (Harisons)
Cost: RM15.00 / M

  •  I was having a tough time placing all the pieces I needed on the amount of fabric I had, next time (yes, they'll be a next time) I'll get 2.5M instead.
  • I don't follow the suggested cutting layout anymore, I just do my thing
  • I've added my 'signature' saddle stitching on the collar, back yoke and pockets.  After I finish my cuffs I'll add some stitching on that too.
  • I've changed the button placket to a hidden one, I've been meaning to try this design and it's quite simple after all
  • For the first time I tried the continuous sleeve placket and it was easy to do and great for fabrics that does not have much body

Grainline - Scout Woven Tee

Pattern: Grainline - Scout Woven Tee
Size: 12
Fabric: 2M 45" Local Polyester (Kamdar)
Cost: RM5.00 / M
Details:

  • Used store bought satin bias binding
  • Bias binding for neckline
  • Seams are French seamed including sleeve seams
  • Garter 3/4 sleeve
  • Narrow 1/4" hem
  • The fabric was labeled Silk Viscose. I knew it wasn't, not at RM5.00/M!
  • I figured since this fabric is quite flowy, it'll benefit more with a narrow hem
  • The sleeve is a franken sleeve from Wiksten Tova.  I cut the cuff wrongly :( so I opted for the garter sleeve instead ... easy peasy

Used a bodkin to insert the elastic

Grainline - Hemlock Tee

Pattern: Grainline - Hemlock Tee
Size: Free
Fabric: 1.25M 60" Cotton Knit (Gift from Jess W)
Details:

  • Used mock serger stitch throughout
  • Used twin needle for the collar
  • Reduced the length by 2"
  • The collar band is a little floppy but hopefully after a wash it will recover
  • The length of the sleeves and wrist circumference is just nice but I need to increase the width of the upper arm about 1" in total to make it more roomy
  • The hems are left unfinished
Looks a little like Breton shirts only the stripes are narrower.  I took a lot of time making sure the stripes matched at the side and shoulder seams.  It was really testing my patience.

Scout Woven Tee

Pattern: Grainline - Scout Woven Tee
Size: 12
Fabric: 1.6M 45" Local Cotton (Nagoya)
Details:

  • Used store bought bias binding instead making my own (read save on fabric)
  • Bias binding for the sleeve and bottom hem
  • Machine stitched the bias binding down
  • The seams are all french seamed including the armhole
The back is designed to be longer than the front.  It's really very simple to put together and it makes a great addition to my home / everyday wear wardrobe.  It's runs a little on the loose side despite choosing the garment based on my bust size.  Unfortunately I've cut 2 more  Scout Woven Tees at sixe 12.  I will remember to go a size down in my next one. I like how a pattern is used over and over again.  Also there's an added incentive since there's a contest over at Kollabora. Yeah ... I'm a sucker for contests ...nevermind not winning any LOL!!
